Traveling across India with my little one has been a journey of discovery, laughter, and learning. From snowy peaks to sandy beaches, from camel rides in deserts to zip lines in the hills, every adventure became richer because I experienced it through my child’s eyes. And along the way, I picked up a few practical lessons that every parent traveling with a kid under five should know.

  • Begin with short treks of 1–2 km. Kids love the thrill of walking in nature, but long hikes can quickly turn into meltdowns.
  • Snowy regions like Kashmir or Uttarakhand are magical, but remember: one pair of comfortable shoes that go with everything and a warm jacket is better than stuffing the bag with options.
  • Pack light: just bread, butter, water, and a few healthy snacks like ragi chips.
  • India offers unique experiences: riding and interacting with animals like elephants, camels, horses, yaks.
  • Adventure sports aren’t just for adults—kids beam with pride when they get a taste of it.
  • Always check safety standards, but if it looks secure, let your child join in. This is where your instincts matter—whether it’s zip lining, paragliding, kayaking, or go-karting.
  • From Goa to Kanyakumari, beaches are playgrounds for kids.
  • Sunsets and sunrises are magical moments—kids may not remember the details, but they’ll remember the feeling of watching the sky change colors with you.
  • If water sports are available and safe, let them dip their toes into kayaking or paddle boating.
  • 2 diapers per day — no more, no less.
  • One extra pair of clothes for the kid.
  • Healthy snacks: ragi chips, fruit, or nuts.
  • Bread, butter, and water — simple lifesavers.
  • One pair of versatile shoes that match every outfit.
Travel light, and you’ll thank yourself when you’re climbing temple steps or hopping onto a jeep safari.
  • Add a theme park, zoo, aquarium or a simple playground to the itinerary.
  • In between temples and treks, give them space to run, play, and just be kids.

Traveling across India with a child under five isn’t about ticking off destinations—it’s about creating shared memories. Whether it’s watching the sunrise in Darjeeling, feeding pigeons at a temple pond in Pondicherry, or laughing together on a go-kart track in Goa, the journey becomes a storybook of experiences.
Pack light, trust your instincts, and let your child taste adventure alongside you. Because when you include them in every step—mountains, temples, seas—their joy becomes the greatest souvenir.
